Being from Ohio I was raised to root against that “state up north,” but I can’t help but fall in love with the “Pure Michigan” campaign. This campaign caught my eye last summer while I was sitting in standstill traffic, despising every second of the rush-hour commute home. What an opportune time to see the serene image of a sunset over a beautiful lake staring down at me from the billboard above. Couple that with the soothing radio spots that followed, and I was yearning for the waters of pure Michigan.
I know a 21-year-old intern shuttling back to her parents’ suburban house wasn’t the campaign’s target, but instead the over-worked professional needing a simple escape. I wasn’t alone however, as I found my YAYA friends were commenting on the ads as well. Now that I’ve started to see the campaign appear in Missouri, I’m interested to see what my fellow YAYAs at Mizzou think.
Check the campaign out for yourself- http://www.michigan.org/topics/Pure-Michigan-Ads/Default.aspx. “Simple sunrise,” “Gone Fishing,” and “Water,” (radio) are my favorite. I think you’ll find that YAYAs don’t always need to be persuaded through flashy jump-cuts, elementary humor or Facebook applications. We still appreciate a simple, well-produced campaign with clean images, and soothing copy.
